1972 Japanese Gran Toros Catalog

This page shows the 1972 Japanese Gran Toros catalog. 1972 was when Mattel S.p.A. began to discontinue the Hot Wheels Gran Toros line (Series Sputafuoco) and split the Mebetoys line into Series Mebetoys, Series Gran Super, Series Europa, and Series Gran Toros (non-Hot Wheels Gran Toros, also known as Sputafuoco. The catalog shows a mix of Sputafuoco Hot Wheels Gran Toros models and the post Sputafuoco models packaged under the Gran Toros name for the European market.

The McLaren Can Am, Model #6626, Chaparral 2J Can Am, Model #6628, and the Ferrari Can Am, Model #6601. Note how a digit was added to the end of the model part number for the Japanese market.



Here we see the integration of "non-Gran Toros" models. Note the model numbers and the wheels. The "true" Hot Wheels Gran Toros here are the Mustang Boss 302, Model #6611, and the Mercedes C 111, Model #6622. The page also shows the Mebetoys series Porsche London to Sydney Rallye, Model #A-51.

The Gran Prix series were 1/28 scale and not part of the Gran Toros series. The "Touring Cars" were part of Mebetoys Series Europa. None of these are "true" Hot Wheels Gran Toros. See the Gran Prix Matra F1, Gran Prix Ferrari F1, BRM P160 F1, 72 Lotus F1, Tyrrell Ford F1, and the March F1.

The Fiat 1500, Model #A-2, was a Mebetoys series models that may have been packaged under the Gran Toros name after Mattel S.p.A. (Mebetoys) discontinued the Sputafuoco (Gran Toros) name in Europe.


These models, like many others in this catalog, were found in Series Europa, Series Gran Super and Series Mebetoys. None of these are "true" Hot Wheels Gran Toros.
